Deacons are the “servants” or “caregivers” of the congregation. Within a congregation, people have a good many needs, be they help recovering from a surgery, support while grieving the loss of a loved one, or needing someone to talk to when they are feeling lonely or ill. Whatever the need, there are many situations in which the loving care and support from members of the congregation is most appreciated. In a very real sense, Deacons are the hands and heart of the Church, because theirs is a ministry of caring.
Serving as a Deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Santa Clara is a privilege, a blessing, and an opportunity to experience spiritual growth and fellowship. As a deacon, one is given the chance to know other church members in a deeper way, serving alongside them, growing in understanding of the burdens people carry and how the church can help.
The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.
